Growing up, I had 3 golden rules to follow: Chew with my mouth closed, always keep my hands washed, and always stand up straight. For some reason, the standing up straight rule always gave me the most trouble. My parents never let me slouch, however, and eventually I was able to develop good posture.
Now that I’m in my mid-thirties, I am truly grateful for all of those “looks” I’d get from my mother when I started slumping in a chair. The fact is, the development of our postural muscles begins very early in life, and like most things, bad habits are hard to break.
Not only does poor posture look bad, it can also create back problems such as muscle pain, joint stiffness, and spinal tenderness. Another possible result of poor posture is something called functional scoliosis, which is an abnormal curvature in the spine related to muscle spasms and postural deviations.
To make matters worse, everything is our body is interconnected. For example, a malfunction in your low back can affect your hips, which can make you walk abnormally, thereby hurting your knees, which then affects your ankles, and so on.
We all age a little each day, but the fact that we’re getting older doesn’t mean that we can’t live a pain-free life. Most of us can remember our parents telling us to stand with good posture, and like the old saying goes: “The older I get, the smarter my parents were.”
